Louder-than-usual engine noise
Some reasons for this include leaking exhaust manifold, damaged muffler, failing catalytic converter, loose exhaust hangers, or cracks in the exhaust piping—alter the normal flow and dampening of exhaust gases, causing the engine’s sound to become louder, lower-pitched, or more aggressive.
Reduced fuel efficiency
Fuel mileage can drop when there’s a clogged or failing catalytic converter, exhaust leaks before the oxygen sensors, damaged exhaust piping, or malfunctioning oxygen sensors—disrupt proper exhaust flow and air-fuel mixture feedback, causing the engine to run less efficiently and consume more fuel.

Causes for this are loose or broken exhaust hangers, deteriorated rubber mounts, damaged heat shields, internal muffler or catalytic converter component failure, or sections of exhaust piping contacting the chassis—allow the exhaust system to move excessively and create noise or vibration while driving.
