A delay or rough transition when switching to 4WD mode can be caused by a failing transfer case actuator, worn or stretched shift linkage, low or degraded transfer case fluid, worn synchronizers or gears inside the transfer case, or electrical faults within the 4WD control system that interrupt proper engagement.
